Central to our proposal is user’s participation in architectural design and construction process, which will eventually lead to buildings that will be more satisfactory for their occupants.
Community architecture is the architecture of the community.
These hyper sustainable architectural rammed earth structures will instigate change and local community interest in sustainability and self-build process.
Proposed modular rammed earth structures utilize minimally processed, nontoxic materials and systems. It incorporates primarily natural materials rather than high
embodied energy, processed commercial materials, with a focus on getting these natural materials from as local a source as possible–ideally, from the building site
Similar proposals will help to construct communities within the built environment focusing on social and environmental sustainability, knowledge sharing, constructive
collective thinking, collaboration across local community will be encouraged.
Transformation into small architecture or fully functional community projects is possible with minimal intervention from industry specialists or local authorities….
Beautiful, thick, solid earthen walls can be created by ramming slightly moistened earth in sturdy forms. The resulting walls can be finished with a clear sealer to
reveal the earth pattern characteristics. Coloured clays or artefacts such as geodes and fossils can be cast into rammed earth walls for added interest. Rammed earth
walls are load-bearing and offer very high thermal mass.
A four-person crew can erect 12 m2 of rammed earth wall per day; with power tools, the same crew can construct 90 m2.
